Why don’t modern people show themselves naked?

 In the Greek and Roman world, great men were proud to display themselves naked.  Today we are reluctant to appear naked, we still feel that nakedness is wrong, so here I have made a collection mostly of men but also some women who were prepared to have themselves displayed naked.

In the world of art nouveau in the dying days of the 19th century, artists were experimenting with nudity, even male nudity. One of the centres of art nouveau, or Jugendstil, as Germans called it, was Darmstadt, where an artist colony was established.

Here there is displayed a statue of the poet Gottfried Schwab, sculpted by his friend Ludwig Habich, showing him proudly naked, penis to the fore.

Here is a portrait by Duncan Grant, distinguished painter and  notorious homosexual member of the Bloomsbury group who slept around widely with both men and women, including Vannesa Bell and Maynard Keynes.

This appears to be a standard classical nude, but it is in fact a very well known person: this is Napoleon’s naughty sister Pauline, who loved disporting herself naked and having sex with as many men as possible

. Her husband Camillo Borghese commissioned the distinguished artist Canova to sculpt her as Diana the Huntress, but she wanted to be sculpted in the nude, so Venus was substituted for Diana and here we see the result.

Shelley died in 1822, when he was drowned in Italy, and his body was washed ashore, 10 days later. This statue was carved more than 50 years later at the behest of his daughter-in-law Lady Shelley, who eventually donated the statue to University College, Oxford, where he had briefly studied in 1810, only to be expelled a year later for writing a tract on The Necessity of Atheism. It was installed at the college in 1892.

Presumably the details of the body are a product of the sculptor’s imagination, but it is interesting that in the late Victorian age, he should sculpt such a realistic penis.

Here is the British actor, Orlando Bloom with his girlfriend, the singer  Katie Perry, showing a fine penis as he paddles her on his paddle board.
Pity that she is so over-dressed, but he is sporting a fine penis of a realistic length. This is how a penis should be presented to the world!

Here we see Victorian Bateman, a 34 year old Cambridge don proudly posing naked, showing her breasts, her pubic hair and her cunt and having it exhibited at the Mall Galleries.

She wanted the painting to ask questions about the sexualisation of women today: she is staring straight at the viewer, in a pose of power, to show that she is in control and that she deliberately wants you to look at her naked body.

Juliet Mills

This is a picture from the film Avanti which is one of Billy Wilder’s classic comedies showing Juliet Mills with alongside bathing naked alongside Jack Lemmon.

Julian Mills was from the aristocracy of British acting as her father was the actor Sir John Mills and her mother was the playwright and actress Mary Hayley Bell

This is a painting that I have found in the Saatchi Art Gallery.

It is by Jonathan Hsiung, a Chinese-American artist who specialises  in nude males, I think essentially for the gay market. I think this is meant to be a modern up-date version of Michel Angelo’s David. The penis is a more realistic size, though I think a little exaggerated 

This is another example of Gay Art, a  genre which has sprung up in the twenty first century.

It is by Julian Hsiung and is called Day Dreamer.  It is I suppose a fine picture and certainly shows off a fine penis, a bit exaggerated perhaps, though with realistically sized balls.

It is not to my taste, but I suppose there is a big market. for this sort of thing. It is on the sale at the Saatchi galleries for $30,000, but I think that a lot of gays are very wealthy.

This is a painting of Rose Boyt, painted of her by her father, Lucian Freud. She was obviously quite happy to be painted nude by her father only requesting that he did not paint her hairy legs, and he seems to have accepted her request. But otherwise he painted her fully nude, showing her bush as the centrepiece of the painting.

She was obviously quite proud of the painting. as it appears in a book, Naked Portrait: A memoir of Lucian Freud, that she wrote about her father. which was reviewed in the Spectator (8th June 2024) from which I took this photo. 

It is a pity that it shows her so muscular – it almost makes her look like a man,  apart from the breasts. But she was clearly very fond of her father, even though he never married her mother, who was one of his many mistresses by whom he had 14 children. Rose was one of his favourite models, both naked and otherwise. He left her the sole beneficiary of his will,  trusting her to make the division of his paintings fairly among his 14 children.

I would like to have some more pictures of modern people, naked, particularly men, brazenly showing their penis, preferably erect or semi-erect, displaying it for the purpose for which it is intended.
